Despite sputtering auto sales in Japan, the super high end of the market, pitching dream cars such as Lamborghinis and Rolls-Royces, has continued to run full throttle here, the Mainichi Shimbun reported on 12 October.
Major overseas automakers have continued to roll out new luxury models aimed at well-heeled Japanese buyers. Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Ltd. has launched the Ghost Extended Wheelbase luxury sedan with wider rear seats for a sticker-shocking ¥34.95mn, including tax. With 17cm added to the distance between the front and rear wheels, passengers in the back seat are given more space so they can sit more comfortably as they enjoy the luxury of riding in—and being seen in—a Rolls-Royce.
According to the Japan Automobile Importers Association, the number of Rolls- Royces sold in Japan between January and September this year increased 21% year on year to 63.
