Executive Committee February 2011

Revitalising and Expanding

By approving revisions to the BCCJ’s venerable Constitution, the Extraordinary General Meeting held at the British Embassy Tokyo on 19 January authorised plans to revitalise and expand the Chamber’s operations. So what exactly are these plans designed to achieve? The goals and the logic are very clear:

1) More Members: By broadening membership criteria and increasing Member benefits without raising fees, we aim to boost overall membership. Japanese and other non-British entities will become eligible for all corporate membership categories. Increased Member benefits should be a major attraction. (Note that values of new benefits shown in the chart below are a conservative calculation, covering only free seats at events and free advertising. They do not include the additional value of editorial promotion and advertising discounts).

2) More (and bigger) events: Expanding membership will increase opportunities to stage high-value events—including, for example, events featuring senior executives of Member firms. Attendance at events will rise as all corporate Members will be allowed to invite unlimited numbers of company representatives (plus some guests) at member rates.

3) More influence: Size matters. As we become a larger and more active Chamber, our influence will grow, enabling us to strengthen our advocacy capability on behalf of Members, working in ever-closer cooperation with the British Embassy and the European Business Council.

4) More value: It all adds up to more value for Members—in financial terms, in terms of increased networking and promotional opportunities, and in terms of the enhanced ability of Members to understand and potentially influence policy issues that affect their businesses.

Change can frighten some people, while inspiring others. To Members who may be apprehensive: be assured the essential British identity and character of the Chamber will be preserved. To Members who are inspired: become more active in the Chamber and volunteer to help!
We are always ready for your call.
