The number of Japanese universities in the world’s top 200 fell from 11 to five, the Times Higher Education reported on 16 September. Assessors this year stressed teaching, research, international mix of staff and students, and ability to use research commercially, rather than reputation and heritage.
The magazine said: ‘‘Recent cuts in higher educa-tion funding, and a new more detailed methodology for the rankings, have exposed serious weaknesses in the performance of Japan’s leading institutions on a global stage’’
