The Queen is troubled by the royal household’s financial problems, the Yomiuri Shimbun reported on 27 August. The funding shortage could affect the Diamond Jubilee celebrations in 2012 to mark the Queen’s 60th anniversary of ascending to the throne. The royal budget, reviewed every 10 years, has not been increased since 1990 and stands at £790 million.
The government’s austerity programme has cut a number of budgets, so an increase in the royal budget will depend on whether there is any economic recovery. The Queen is said to strongly hope for an increase and enjoys national support, but a number of Britons believe she should make concessions when the economy is down.
