The Glover Award ceremony that celebrates British traders Thomas Blake Glover (1838-1911) and Frederick Ringer (1838-1907) was attended by Ambassador David Warren and held at Glover Garden in Nagasaki, the Nagasaki Shimbun reported on 19 September.
Scotsman Glover arrived in Nagasaki on 19 September 1859 and established Glover Trading. He contributed to the modernisation of Japan during the end of the Edo Period and into the Meiji Period. Ringer managed Glover’s overseas trade and later replaced Glover as leader of the city’s foreign settlement.
