New Device Is Better Blood Pressure Monitor

A PhD student is tested at the Leicester University Cardiovascular Biomedical Research Unit

Research by King’s College London, the Medical University of Fukushima and the State University of New York has achieved breakthrough findings in measuring blood pressure, the London Press Service reported on 19 July.

High blood pressure, a major risk factor in strokes, heart disease and premature death, is also linked to an increased risk of kidney disease and dementia.

The new device more accurately measures the pressure close to the heart. Blood pressure is currently measured in the arm, but does not always accurately reveal the pressure in the larger arteries close to the heart.

Measuring blood pressure in the aorta is important because this is where it can cause damage, and the pressure in the aorta can be different from that of the arm.
