Heathrow Airport expected record sales during the Christmas season, in large part from purchases of Scotch whisky by Japanese travellers, according to a press release issued on 9 December.
Popular UK products bought in airports include English tea, Scottish salmon and single malt whisky.
Japanese and Turkish travellers are the main buyers of single malts, while tea purchases mostly are made by Chinese customers, and buyers of salmon generally are Middle Eastern passengers.
According to a personal shopper at the airport, “The Asian market—including mainland China, Hong Kong, Japan and Singapore—likes the romance and heritage of a traditional British Christmas”.
