A strawberries and cream sandwich went on sale for £1 at UK supermarkets on 20 June, according to British tabloids. They called it a world-first, unaware that the snack has been sold in Japan for years.
Tesco launched the sandwich to mark summer, Wimbledon and the biggest crop of home-grown strawberries for at least 20 years.
Made with sliced strawberries, Cornish clotted cream and strawberry jam between two slices of white poppy-seed bread, the sandwich is being sold at 750 stores. Bloggers later said that many were not being sold and were being offered for 40p.
