Top honours in the fashion category at the Design Museum of London Design Awards went to Issey Miyake and his “Reality Lab” team, according to a 4 May London Gazette report.
Among those whom Miyake beat are Sarah Burton (designer of Kate Middleton’s wedding dress, and creator of Alexander McQueen’s “Savage Beauty” exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum in New York) and Vivienne Westwood (Ethical Fashion Africa Project collection).
Miyake’s collection, based the philosophy of making clothing from “a piece of cloth” (A-POC), features high-tech machinery to weave garments into tubes of material that need only be cut out to be worn.
