London has fallen in love with sake, pushing sales higher than had been expected, The Independent reported on 25 August.
The popularity of Japan’s traditional drink is thought to be due to bars and restaurants capitalising on the popularity of Japanese cuisine, and the ease with which sake can be paired with different foods (page 54).
Hakkasan Group’s London restaurants reported a 50% increase in sales of sake over the past three years, while wholesaler Bibendum Wine Ltd. has introduced 15 sakes from four producers in Japan.
The completion of a successful pilot course has also prompted the Wine & Spirit Education Trust, which delivers drinks training, to launch its first sake course.
