Pamela Warren, wife of Ambassador David Warren, asked the Chiyoda Nyantonarukai animal-welfare group to neuter the seven stray cats living around the British Embassy Tokyo grounds, the NPO’s newsletter reported in December. Kind embassy staff had named and cared for each cat, but they feared a population explosion if the clutter was left unchecked. The NPO—motto “TNR: Trap, Neuter, Return”—sprang into action.
When volunteers couldn’t immediately pick up a trapped cat, the ambassador used his embassy car to take it to surgery. Six cats have returned “home”, and the remaining one has become the science and innovation consul’s pet.
